Key Topics Paper 1

Q1- Information retrieval- paraphrasing key ideas from a text

Q2- Identifying techniques used by writers and analysing language and considering the effects that language has on readers (Impressions, images, thoughts and feelings)

Q3- Exploring the effect of structure in a text- how has a text been ordered to interest a reader and why you think this has happened?

Q4- Creating an argument and exploring your own point of view about a text. Students need to evaluate if they agree or disagree with a statement provided and use the extract to support what they are arguing. This also involves identifying methods/techniques and analysing what they show.

Q5- (50% of the marks) Writing to describe- students will base their description on an image provided. They will have to vary their vocabulary, their punctuation and their sentence lengths to interest their audience, whist considering using an interesting structure and a range of descriptive techniques in their writing.

  • AVIPSAMOSA techniques (descriptive writing - paper 1)
  • How to approach each question – what it is testing, how much you are expected to write, how to approach the questions, how long to spend on each one
  • Their WONDER WORDS- impressive vocabulary which will allow them to write more imaginatively and sophisticatedly.
  • The helpful acronyms for each question (PETAL, etc)
